Types of Planned Gifts
Bequests (Will or Trust)
Including the Msgr. Edward C. Dunn Foundation in your will or trust is a simple and meaningful way to leave a legacy. You can:
- Leave a specific dollar amount or percentage of your estate.
- Bequeath specific assets such as real estate or securities.
- Give the residue of your estate after other distributions are made.
Sample Bequest Language: “I hereby give, devise, and bequeath [dollar amount, percentage, or description of asset] to the Msgr. Edward C. Dunn Foundation for Education, a nonprofit organization located at 104 W. 1st Street, Mansfield, Ohio 44902-2199, Tax ID: 34-1477702, for its general charitable purposes.”
We encourage you to share your plans with us so we may thank you during your lifetime and ensure your gift is used as you intend.
Charitable Gift Annuities (CGAs)
A CGA allows you to make a charitable donation while receiving a fixed income for life. After your lifetime, the remaining funds support the mission of the Dunn Foundation.
Benefits:
- Guaranteed income stream for one or two beneficiaries.
- Partially tax-free income.
- Immediate charitable income tax deduction.
Ask your financial advisor or contact us to learn about current payout rates and how a CGA could work for you.
Life Insurance Policies
You can name the Msgr. Edward C. Dunn Foundation as a full or partial beneficiary of an existing life insurance policy, or purchase a new policy specifically for charitable giving.
Ways to give:
- Name the Foundation as the primary or contingent beneficiary.
- Transfer ownership of a paid-up policy for an immediate charitable deduction.
Retirement Plan Assets
Designating the Dunn Foundation as a beneficiary of your IRA, 401(k), or other retirement accounts is a tax-smart way to make a legacy gift.
Benefits:
- Avoid potential double taxation on retirement assets.
- Simple to update through your plan administrator.
- No need to amend your will or trust.
This is often one of the most efficient ways to make a charitable gift, as retirement assets left to individuals may be subject to significant taxes, but those left to nonprofits pass tax-free.
Charitable Remainder Trusts (CRTs) & Charitable Lead Trusts (CLTs)
These more complex giving vehicles allow you to support the Foundation while achieving your estate planning goals.
- A Charitable Remainder Trust provides income to you or loved ones for life or a term of years, with the remainder going to the Foundation.
- A Charitable Lead Trust provides annual income to the Foundation for a set period, after which the remaining assets are returned to your heirs, often with reduced estate taxes.
These trusts require professional guidance but can offer powerful benefits to you, your family, and our mission.
